Personal Care Aide / Respite Care Aide
Average hourly pay rate: $9 - 10.50
Personal Care Aides work for home care agencies to provide personal care services in the care recipients' home.
Job Description: Enables individuals to remain at or return home from nursing facility or hospital and/or provide temporary relief to primary caregivers. Duties may include assisting with grooming, routine maintenance and care of external catheters, dressing/undressing, assisting with walking and changing position, toilet needs, feeding, and medications, as well as reporting temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Entry-Level Minimum Requirements
- Physical ability to do the work
- Ability to read and write proficiently in English
- High school diploma or GED may be required depending on the program
Training
Completion of a 40-hour training program consistent with DMAS requirements.
DMAS requirements can be met in one of three ways:
- Registration as a Certified Nurse Aide
- Graduated from an approved Virginia institute. (Graduates from an unapproved training program must have agency contact DMAS Waiver Services Unit to verify the curriculum is approved by DMAS, or the provider must obtain the curriculum and submit it to DMAS for approval.)
- Provider-offered training: Content must be consistent with DMAS Aide Training Course Outline
Licensure/Education Requirements:
- Virginia Board of Nursing Certified Nursing Assistant certificate of registration containing a registration number and an expiration date. If the certification has expired and the aide has not renewed, the agency must contact the Board of Nursing to ensure that the aide's certification was not revoked and that the aide meets one of the other two DMAS requirements.
- Boarding of Nursing accredited institution applicant's certificate or program certificate and DMAS approval
- Provider PCA training program certificate and DMAS approval
