ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1998

  • Governed by a Steering Committee until 2001 when the Board of Directors was elected.
  • Developed collaborations with a broad range of organizations.
2000
  • Collaborated with Legislators to direct the Joint Commission on Health Care to study strategies to educate, train, recruit and retain nurses.
  • Prepared House Joint Resolution report on nursing education.
  • Collaborated with the Virginia Hospital and Health Care Association (VHHA) to collect supply and demand data from hospitals.
  • Worked with Legislators to direct the Board of Nursing to perform data collection of nursing workforce data.
2001
  • Held a Spring Summit in collaboration with the Virginia League for Nursing with 200 participants from nursing practice and education that established the VA Strategic Plan and work groups.
  • Identified six Strategic Issues and recruited co-chairs for task forces around the six initiatives.
  • Conducted Fall Summit in collaboration with the University of Virginia Bice Lectures with 150 participants to update nursing leaders about the progress to address the strategic issues.
2002
  • Received a grant for funding from the Riverside Health System Foundation ($20,000 grant and $20,000 challenge grant).
  • Developed recommendations with the Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing.
  • Offering the April VPN/VHHA collaborative meeting on Nursing Recruitment and Retention.
  • Co hosted the Nursing Educators Summit with the Associate Degree Program Directors to plan the Virginia Educational Mobility Plan for LPN through RN/BS.
  • Developed the Nurses Change Lives Recruitment Campaign and websites
2003
  • Elected officers for the newly incorporated 501c3 organization.
  • Presented the Third Annual Summit focused on retention with over 160 people in attendance.
  • Received grants funding from the Carilion Health System, the Virginia Health Care Association, the Albemarle Rotary and the Virginia Hospital and Health Care Association.
  • Launched the VPN "Are you man enough" recruitment campaign with a grant from VHHA.
2004-2006
  • Continued holding annual Summits focused on key issues in nursing recruitment and retention
  • Assisted the Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing on its Strategic Plan.
  • Finalized the Nursing Education Articulation plan for VA -LPN to RN and RN to BS.
  • Launched the Multicultural nursing and Nursing Faculty websites with grants from VHHA.
  • Worked to develop a proposal for a VA Nursing Workforce Center and work continues into 2007
  • Worked with SCHEV on the Condition of Nursing in VA Report and the tour of VA Regions to develop local solutions to nursing shortage.
  • Co-sponsored the Legislative Summit with LCVN
  • Receives a grant from the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation to complete the planning for the Central Virginia Nursing Leadership Institute
2007
  • Advocates and educates, Governor Kaine proposes and the Legislature approves special 10% raises for nursing faculty in 2 and 4 year colleges and creates a special nursing faculty education scholarship program to reduce the nursing faculty shortage
  • Members appointed to the Governor's Health reform Taskforce Workgroups
  • Worked with the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation to create best practices model Nurse Manager Educational Institute and submits this grant proposal to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and locally to the Cameron and John Randolph Foundations. The Institute will begin in Fall 2007.
  • Hosts the Nursing Specialty Organization meeting in collaboration with VNA. 40 nursing organizations invited to hear Secretary Marilyn Tavenner and begin multi-organization strategic planning
  • Offer the Legislative Summit with LCVN for the 2nd year.
