WHAT IS VPN?
The Virginia Partnership for Nursing, established in 1998, is a part of the Colleagues in Caring initiative through the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation as a statewide nursing workforce initiative.
MISSION
Transform health care in the Commonwealth of Virginia by creating a nursing workforce responsive to consumer health care needs.
GOALS - WORKFORCE CENTER
Collaborate with DHP other stakeholders to assure analysis and dissemination of nursing workforce data.
Establish a permanent organization for analyzing health workforce issues and propose solutions to need, supply and demand issues.
Coordinate information and data within the state to assure public policy that fosters the health of Virginia's citizens.
Coordinate and disseminate accurate information related to nursing education and practice.
Support the development of the workforce of the future.
GOALS - EDUCATION
Foster education and practice partnerships designed to enhance the delivery of nursing care and to promote the retention of nurses.
Serve in an advisory capacity to appropriate Virginia boards.
Procure, accept and administer grants, donations or loans from any public or private source for the above purposes.
GOALS - ADVISORY/BEST PRACTICES
Develop a nursing workforce recruitment model for Virginia.
Develop practice models that meet the nursing needs of Virginias.
Work with a broad group of health care entities to promote the highest quality of nursing care.
Serve in an advisory capacity to appropriate Virginia boards.
Procure, accept and administer grants, donations or loans from any public or private source for the above purposes.
Increase the awareness of children and young adults through partnerships with local school systems regarding the role of nurses in community development and service.
NEWS
I am pleased to announce that Maureen H. Schnittger has accepted the position of Faculty Coordinator for the Nurse Leadership Institute of Central Virginia. She has already begun working and is excited about working with Fellows and Virginia partners and leaders.
The Nurse Leadership Institute of Central Virginia (NLI) is a part of the Partners Investing in Nursing's Future Program. A national collaborative of the Robert Wood Johnson and Northwest Health Foundations, the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, the Cameron Foundation and a number of local partners.

Maureen H. Schnittger, PhD, RN. Faculty Coordinator
Dr. Schnittger has significant nursing leadership experience as the Director of Nursing at Western State Hospital, Staunton, VA and before that as Director of Clinical Services at Catawba Hospital, Catawba, VA. Prior to accepting the position at Catawba Hospital, she served on the faculty of Radford University, Radford, VA. Her professional leadership positions include the Virginia Nurses Association, the Virginia Partnership for Nursing organizations and as a Board member of the Mental Health Association of Augusta. In 2006, Governor Kaine appointed her to the Governor's Healthcare Reform Commissions Workforce Work Group. Virginia's Health Reform Commission made recommendations to the Governor for important changes in Virginia's policies for health care.
